  • Creative and imaginative play is important for children’s development because it provides an opportunity for them to practice and develop their language and social skills, it boosts the development of problem-solving and self-regulation skills, and with imaginative play, they can satisfy their need for self-expression as well as develop a huge range of skills.

  • The Pikler Triangle is an indoor climbing frame developed by a Hungarian Paediatrician, Dr. Emmi Pikler in the 1930s. Dr Pikler developed a new theory on child development, based on theory that children should be allowed to move freely and develop at his or her own pace.

  • The Pikler Triangle with slide/ladder allows children a developmentally appropriate place to climb, jump, balance and slide, which we all know they are going to do at some stage regardless of whether you give them something to do it on or not! It also sparks children’s imagination and creativity.

As children develop, they will interpret the frame in many different ways. Climbing is wonderful for children’s mental and physical health.

  • Yes, however, children are safest when they are observed closely but without adult physical intervention. Usually children will only climb as high as they feel safe and comfortable. As children grow in confidence in their own abilities, they will become physically self-aware. This is the exciting part as they will learn to understand their bodies and their capabilities.

  • As well as encouraging children to climb, slide and jump, the Pikler Triangle helps to develop gross and fine motor skills, which support balance, creativity, co-ordination and grip strength. Gross motor skills are those which require whole body movement and which involve the large core stabilising muscles, such as climbing.

Fine motor skills are the ability to make movements using the small muscles in our hands and wrists, such as gripping the rungs of a ladder. This will help with grip strength for pencils, pens, spoons, knives and forks.

  • Children as young as 6 months will use the climbing frame to pull on and hold, and with time, slowly use it to stand and move. What is more important than age is the developmental stage your child has reached and when they are ready to start using it and exploring what they can do. The optimal age range is 6 months to 5 years. However, older children may still find creative and imaginative ideas for independent play.
